What happens in 2011
The main focus in 2011 will be the introduction of a new library system. In November 2010 BIBSYS and OCLC entered into a contract concerning supply of a new next generation library system. The new system is still being developed by OCLC, and will not be used by the BIBSYS libraries until January 2013.
The supply from OCLC includes a standard product: Web-Scale Management System (WMS). However, a standard product such as WMS will not contain all the functions needed by our user institutions. BIBSYS is therefore to develop and run necessary additional services.
We must also convert the data in our present library system and make sure that they are available in the new system when this is adopted. In addition, we must ensure necessary integrations with surrounding systems.
In 2011 we will gain an overview of the new system and of how to develop the necessary additional services. The user institutions’ first involvement will take place from as early as 2011. For the BIBSYS libraries the first meeting with the new system will take place at the BIBSYS User Meeting in March. Training and other assistance to the institutions will happen in 2012.
The current library system will be functional and efficient until its replacement in 2013. We will make a few minor improvements to meet the urgent needs of the user institutions. However, we must prioritise those improvements that will simplify the transition to the new library system, among others improvements that will provide correct and high quality data in the Library Database. We will continue importing holdings and subscription data for the libraries’ e-journals and e-books in 2011.
In 2011 BIBSYS Brage will be upgraded with the newest version of the system software DSpace. In the course of the year BIBSYS ForskDok will be replaced by Cristin, so the upgrading will primarily consist of quality assurance and transference of data from databases and registers in BIBSYS ForskDok to Cristin.
In 2011 we will continue our work for the National Library of Norway. Tasks include further development of the National Authority Registers and continued work with integrating the National bibliographies into the BIBSYS Library System.
In the coming year BIBSYS will continue to prioritise active participation in national and international forums of cooperation. Our commitment in a number of collaboration forums will continue: The Group of Library System Suppliers in Norway, Nora (Norwegian Open Research Archives), The Norwegian Committee on Cataloguing, The Norwegian Committee on Classification and Indexing, ELAG (European Library Automation Group), SVUC (Scandinavian Virtual Union Catalogue) and the Dspace User Group. Our main priority, however, will be further development of our cooperation with OCLC, both in a formal collaboration project connected to the introduction of a new library system and through participation in OCLC’s user forums.
BIBSYS has state-of-the-art computers, and we will continue our strategic focus on IT-service and maintaining a modern infrastructure. These important factors contribute to the efficient running of additional services to be developed in connection with the new library system, as well as contribute to the quality of the other products and services we supply. We also offer computer operation, software and rental of file storage. Please contact us to learn more about what we have to offer.
