BIBSYSx

BIBSYSx creates links from external databases so that users may find and order documents from the BIBSYS Library Database. Normally a button marked BIBSYSx will be displayed.

What is BIBSYSx?

Key services in BIBSYSx include an overview of holdings in the BIBSYS libraries, links to any electronic editions, and the potential to submit a loan order for a book or a copy order for an article. In addition, BIBSYSx will also be able to provide links to content, book reviews, online bookshops etc.

Links to BIBSYSx may be created in a number of services, both from databases provided by BIBSYS and from external suppliers:

  • WebSPIRS (database service run by OVID/SilverPlatter).
  • PubMed from NLM. (Read about BIBSYSx in PubMed)
  • The databases NORBOK (Norwegian national bibliography) and SAMBOK Norwegian union catalogue of monographs) from The National Library of Norway.
  • Web of Science from ISI.
  • FirstSearch from OCLC.
  • SwetsWise Online Content from Swets Information Services.
  • And others.

BIBSYSx supports the standard OpenURL (Wikipedia).

Who can use BIBSYSx?

Everyone has access to the service BIBSYSx, but the extent of information and services provided, generally depends on the user’s identity. For the time being, your user identity is connected to your internet address (domain name). If you are connected to the computer network of an institution using BIBSYS, you will gain information and services adapted to this institution:

  • Holdings information from the library of this institution will be listed first.
  • Links to electronic resources (for instance, electronic periodicals) will be limited to the subscriptions of this institution.

If you are not recognised as a user of a specific institution, you will receive complete holdings information for all BIBSYS libraries. You will receive links only to electronic resources that are free of charge or that are provided by national subscription agreements.

However, all users will always have access to the loan and copy order functions.

BIBSYSx may also be used by libraries that have access to external systems such as SFX and TDNet TourResolver. BIBSYSx forwards requests to external products when the user has access to them. If you want to change to another external product or to BIBSYSx, you can do this by linking to BIBSYSx. When BIBSYS has been updated, all external links will function. Alternatively, you may update all external database suppliers when you change your link supplier.
